In an effort to combat the rise of pesky mosquitoes this season, Hillsborough County Mosquito Management Services is rolling out a natural defense mechanism at no cost to the residents—free mosquitofish. According to a recent announcement by Hillsborough County, community members residing in Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City can get their hands on these efficient insect detractors starting March 29, at a series of giveaway events.
Mosquitofish, despite their diminutive size, are touted by ecologists as an environmental-friendly solution to control mosquito populations, which in turn can curb the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Once introduced to standing water areas such as ponds, fountains, or unused pools, they feed on mosquito larvae, effectively nipping the problem in the bud. An interesting facet of these fish, as outlined by Hillsborough County, is that they are low maintenance, not requiring any feeding and a special breeding environment, unlike other fish.
For residents interested in acquiring mosquitofish for their property, Hillsborough County officials ask that you bring a photo ID establishing your residency within the county. The staff will be documenting your ID into the mosquito management system, ensuring the distribution process is tracked. It’s also important to note that these fish are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, as supplies last. Furthermore, at each event, the Mosquito Management Public Education Trailer will be stationed, offering attendees actionable advice on how to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in their own yards.
