Galveston has witnessed a major crackdown on illegal drug sales after authorities recently conducted raids on three Hazy Daze smoke shops. The owner, 43-year-old Shlomi Wolraich, was arrested during the operation and is facing charges of engaging in organized crime and money laundering. He is currently being held without bond. According to Click2Houston, a six-month investigation preceded the busts, with $1.6 million being seized from a bank account linked to the sale of illegal substances.
Investigators worked diligently to gather evidence, which included the utilization of surveillance video, interviews, and undercover operations. During the raids, detectives found products containing tryptamine, a substance used to produce psilocybin, among other synthetic and organic psychedelic drugs. "The problem with these drugs is that they’re marketed in such a way as to be attractive to minors and juveniles and young people, and they are highly addictive," Galveston County District Attorney Jack Roady told Click2Houston. The smoke shops' locations included spots on the Seawall and the Strand, which have now garnered attention due to the illicit activities taking place within.
Alongside Wolraich, four additional individuals have been apprehended with charges ranging from the illegal carrying of a weapon to possession of controlled substances and engaging in organized criminal activity. Brice Knight, Alejandro Ramirez, Brandon Bell, and Cassius Stinson all face legal repercussions with bonds set accordingly, from as low as $1,500 to as high as $100,000. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office, aided by the League City Police Department and the Dickinson Police Department, led the initiative to dismantle this criminal operation, as noted by KHOU.
With community safety at risk, the investigation sought to promptly eliminate sources that facilitated access to dangerous substances, particularly for young individuals. As the case progresses, additional charges are pending, and authorities have indicated that further information will be disclosed as permitted.
