The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident in East Point, where an officer shot a 27-year-old woman identified as Trauneycia Langley. This incident unfolded during a confrontation where Langley reportedly was in a state of distress, exhibiting suicidal tendencies. The GBI is looking into the events that led to the use of a firearm by an East Point police officer this past Saturday.
According to a press release from the GBI, police were called to the scene on the 2400 block of Stone Road at approximately 5:00 p.m. in response to reports of a person with suicidal thoughts. Upon arrival, the officers engaged with Langley, attempting to calm her down and to convince her to undergo a mental health evaluation voluntarily. Unfortunately, the situation escalated rapidly, as Langley reportedly became agitated and combative.
The situation reached a critical point when Langley, armed with a knife, charged at one of the responding officers. An initial attempt to subdue her with a Taser was ineffective. As a result, an officer shot Langley. The officers then administered medical aid, and Langley was subsequently transported to a local hospital for further treatment. The press release confirms that while Langley was injured, no officers sustained injuries during the incident.
The GBI's role is to ensure a thorough and independent review of the officer's actions. Once the GBI investigation is complete, they will hand over the case file to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for examination. As per standard protocol, the DA's office will review the GBI's findings to determine the next steps. The GBI press release emphasizes transparency and impartiality, stating that detailed information will be provided as the investigation progresses.
