An officer-involved shooting in Atlanta is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), following a 911 call reporting a man with a gun threatening people. The GBI stated that Travis Walker, a 42-year-old Atlanta resident, was injured during the encounter with the police. The incident unfolded in the 2000 block of Lakewood Drive SW in Atlanta, where Walker was reportedly seen standing over an individual who was working on a car and allegedly brandishing a firearm.
Upon arrival, the officer involved tried to de-escalate the situation, commanding Walker to remove his hand from the gun. According to the GBI's press release, the officer then made the decision to quickly fire his weapon, striking Walker. After being shot, Walker complied with the officer's instructions and laid down on the ground. A handgun was found close to where Walker was shot, and no officers were reported to be injured during the incident.
Following the shooting, Walker received medical attention at a local hospital. His condition, and the extent of his injuries, have not been disclosed as of now. The circumstances around the initial 911 call and what precisely precipitated the shooting remain part of the ongoing investigation by the GBI.
The independent investigation by the GBI will look to piece together the events that led up to the shooting. The agency has pledged to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case before handing over the completed file to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office. The DA's office will then review the case to determine if any charges will to be filed. As the investigation continues, updates are expected to be provided by the GBI.
