The GEO Group, a private prison corporation based in Florida, has confirmed the reopening of the North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin, Michigan, to serve as a federal immigration processing center for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As reported by The Detroit News, the 1,800-bed facility, which had been shuttered in 2022, is being reactivated, and is expected to transition to a long-term contract soon, positioned to generate an estimated $70 million in annual revenue for GEO Group.

According to MLive, this contract aligns with rising efforts by private companies, controlling 90% of immigration detainee housings, to meet the demands of the federal government's deportation policies. This development comes after the Biden administration ceased all federal contracts with for-profit prisons in 2022. "We expect that our company-owned North Lake Facility in Michigan will play an important role in helping meet the need for increased federal immigration processing center bedspace," said George C. Zoley, GEO Group Executive Chairman.

GEO's operations have been marked by controversies and scrutiny due to allegations of substandard living conditions and mistreatment of detainees. The News 8 report highlights opposition from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which argues against using the facility for ICE detainees. The organization cites concerns over negligence and abuse in the ICE detention system. On the other side, local leaders have conveyed their approval, considering the economic impact, recognizing that even closed, it was the county's largest taxpayer, and when operational, the facility employs approximately 300 workers.

Furthermore, GEO Group's expansion signifies an integral component of the federal government's initiative to bolster detention capacity, reportedly reaching its limits with 47,000 people currently detained by ICE. A senior ICE official earlier told Reuters that additional bed space is needed to cope with the increasing number of detainees. The North Lake Correctional Facility's anticipated reactivation is just one among three recent contract acquisitions by GEO, as they continue to play a central role in implementing President Trump's strict immigration enforcement policies, The Detroit News reported.
