Tragedy struck in Bell Mountain, Georgia, when twin brothers Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis, both 19, were found with gunshot wounds earlier this month. Investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) initially suggested a murder-suicide, but the official cause of death is still pending as the GBI's medical examiner awaits further forensic tests, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The case took a deeper turn when it was revealed the twins had missed a flight to Boston on March 7, and their bodies were discovered by a hiker a day later. The family, believing the brothers would never harm each other, has struggled to accept the theory proposed by authorities. "They’re very protective of each other. They love each other. I couldn’t imagine them hurting each other because I’ve never seen them get into a fistfight before," the twins' uncle, Rahim Brawner, told the NY Post.
As questions arise about how the twins ended up at the remote mountain location, a place they were not known to visit, their family is seeking to uncover the full story. In an effort to help with funeral costs and honor the twins’ dream of starting a clothing line, their aunt Yasmin Brawner set up a GoFundMe campaign. "To say they did this to each other? No. Something happened in those mountains, and we want answers," she said in an interview with the NY Post.
The GBI, along with the Towns County Sheriff's Office, continues to investigate the case.
