A heroic act by a Barrow County sheriff's deputy garnered widespread attention after bodycam footage captured him rescuing a baby girl from a smoke-filled Georgia apartment. Last Tuesday, Deputy Jhancarlos Arango, along with support from a Winder Police Department officer, braved thick smoke to locate and save the infant as a fire raged. FOX 5 Atlanta reported the details of the dramatic rescue.
According to footage and official statements, the deputies were responding to an apartment complex fire on Apperson Drive in Winder, Georgia, when they heard that an infant was trapped. Making their advance through heavy smoke that made breathing and visibility nearly impossible, Arango's dedication to saving the baby girl could not be clearer despite having wrapped a shirt around his face as a makeshift filter, he choked on the thick air while locating the baby, saying, "I got it. I got it. I got it," just before expressing fear of passing out, as noted in his bodycam footage shared by 41NBC. After handing off the infant to safety, the deputy collapsed, relieved.
Both Deputy Arango and the baby were provided with medical treatment following the rescue and are expected to recover fully. The emotional toll of the situation was evident when Deputy Arango said, "Thank you, God," comparing the rescue to his thoughts of his own daughter during the endeavor, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
While the child's family has attributed the fire's cause to an exploding candle, the official investigation remains pending to confirm the exact origins of the blaze. Meanwhile, the baby's mother has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help rebuild their lives post-fire. Sheriff Jud Smith conveyed the harrowing nature of the fire, acknowledging the intense situation that turned officers and even the child's parents back due to the impenetrable smoke, before deputy Arango’s persistence paid off, leading to the baby's successful rescue, according to 41NBC.
