Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced new security measures for Miami Beach during this year's Spring Break to ensure law and order in the area. At a press conference at the Z Hotel on Collins Avenue, DeSantis revealed plans to deploy 140 state troopers across Florida, with a focus on Miami Beach. The initiative began in late February and is expected to continue through April, according to NBC Miami.
DeSantis mentioned that while Florida saw a record 140 million visitors in 2024, the influx of tourists during busy seasons like Spring Break can lead to disorder. Additional law enforcement resources, such as drones, aviation assets, and K-9 units, will also be used. These measures have already helped reduce incidents, with Miami Beach seeing only 16 arrests and 17 misdemeanors during the Spring Break weekend, as reported by Local 10.
The move comes after a violent Spring Break in 2023, which saw two deadly shootings, 488 arrests, and over 100 firearms seized. Following the introduction of strict measures last year, including DUI checkpoints and traffic enforcement, arrests dropped to just 16. DeSantis emphasized that while Miami Beach is welcoming, the city cannot allow chaos to take over.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner expressed support for the governor's plan, highlighting the success of state law enforcement efforts. "Our residents and businesses bought in. We kept people safe and had calm instead of chaos. It’s not just the month of March; law and order is 365 days in the state of Florida," Meiner told Local 10
