Grady Health System is seeking input from Fulton County residents regarding a new freestanding emergency room planned for Union City, set to open in the fall of 2026. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the 20,000-square-foot ER will operate 24/7 to address a "healthcare desert" in the area, especially following the closure of Atlanta Medical Center in 2022, which left a gap in emergency services south of I-20.

Grady Health is focused on involving the community in the planning process. The ER will have 16 bays staffed by board-certified physicians, nurses, and other clinicians to handle serious or life-threatening conditions. It will also offer imaging and lab services, a pharmacy, and other healthcare amenities.

Grady Health System President and CEO John Haupert explained the choice of Union City as the location. "Union City is smack dab in the middle and decided geographically, that’s where that emergency department needed to be," Haupert told FOX 5 Atlanta. Residents are invited to complete a survey to share their feedback on the facility's construction and services, with funding supported by Fulton County and federal resources.

Atlanta News First reports that the ER will feature 16 exam rooms, including two for critical care, and four observation rooms. It will also provide advanced imaging services such as CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds, as well as a waiting area for patients and families. In addition to emergency care, the facility will include a community room for health education and outreach programs.

Grady Health System encourages community participation, with residents invited to provide input through a survey shared by Atlanta News First.
