Christian Menefee, the current Harris County Attorney, has announced his candidacy for the 18th Congressional District seat, previously held by the late Rep. Sylvester Turner and Sheila Jackson Lee. A filing with the Federal Election Commission last Saturday evening confirms Menefee's campaign to represent Harris County in Congress, as reported by CW39.
Menefee's announcement of his congressional candidacy follows a major endorsement from Erica Lee Carter, the daughter of the late Congresswoman Jackson Lee and who formerly occupied Jackson Lee’s seat prior to Turner's tenure. According to a Click2Houston article, Carter is serving as the chairwoman of Menefee’s campaign.
In a statement indicative of his campaign messages, Menefee said, "I’m running for Congress because working families need a fighter in Washington." He criticised current political opponents, "Republicans are gutting Social Security, attacking healthcare and reproductive rights, and making life more expensive for everyday people.” These remarks emphasize his focus on addressing issues such as healthcare access, education quality, and the cost of living for his potential constituents, in a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
Menefee, who made history in 2020 by becoming the youngest and first African American elected as Harris Co. attorney, highlighted his record of public service, noting his legal challenges against the governor and corporate polluters in defense of his community. "I’ve sued Greg Abbott to protect voting rights, held corporate polluters accountable, and pushed back against Trump’s attacks on working families," Menefee shared with Click2Houston. Asserting his readiness, he declared, "Now, I’m ready to take that fight to Congress."
