The Hawaii State Capitol witnessed a gathering of minds and resources as the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) hosted the highly pertinent 20th Consumer Protection Week Fair, aligning with National Consumer Protection Week. This event, which took place recently, aimed at educating the public about their consumer rights and how to combat fraudulent activities.
The fair became a hub where officials offered advice on best consumer practices and provided support with various inquiries, including those about tax filings and financial assistance initiatives, the DCCA took efforts to steer the public towards proactive consumerism when they showcased the BusinessCheck initiative, a platform that's designed to serve as a centralized location for business-related information in Hawaii. According to the DCCA's announcement, representatives were also at hand to assist senior care questions and more.
Networking opportunities were a key feature of the fair, allowing attendees to form connections with specialists in various fields; this was seen as a step towards equipping consumers with the necessary tools to uphold their rights. "Thank you to the government agencies, consumer protection groups and organizations whose collaboration made this event a great success," DCCA Director Nadine Ando conveyed in remarks featured on their website.
Given the propensity of consumer complaints, particularly against unlicensed contractors, the DCCA leverages the NCPW Fair to educate the community and stressing the importance of using licensed contractors, especially in the wake of the Maui wildfires. DCCA urges caution and the use of their BusinessCheck resource where the public can verify a contractor's credibility and licenses, including an overview of their complaint history and proof of insurance, as the state is still rebuilding from fires, floods, and various natural calamities.
Various organizations participated in the Fair, including the Better Business Bureau and the Hawaiian Electric Co. Groups ranged from financial institutions to emergency management, health and senior services, showcasing the wide spectrum of consumer protection in the state. The full list of participants can be viewed on the DCCA's website.
