The banquet hall at Heʻeia State Park, a cornerstone for community events in Windward Oʻahu, has swung its doors open once again starting March 1. In a report from DLNR, it's been said that within this short span, they've already clocked over 200 reservations and engagements for a wide spectrum of social celebrations – including baby luaus, birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries, a true testament to its esteemed position locally.
After a month-long closure triggered by the lease cancellation with nonprofit Kama‘aina Care, Inc., Heʻeia State Park's banquet facilities are back in business, chalking up nearly five decades of partnership with the DLNR Division of State Parks since it was first established as a state park in 1977, encapsulating memories and totems of a place once known as “Ulumau Village.” Halau Nohona Hawai‘i is currently steering the ship on a month-to-month basis after being granted a revocable permit by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources in January, in the meanwhile DLNR simmers on future plans to further enrich the community experience, with thoughts on educational enhancements and estuary stewardship dotting the horizon.
In preparation for this revitalized chapter, the DLNR has not held back, supplying the banquet hall with 300 new chairs and 40 tables each piece now tagged as parks property; moreover, a dedicated DSP caretaker unlocks the entrance gate every morning and maintains the comfort station. Nevertheless, the grounds upkeep will be shouldered by outsourced services for the time being, given that DSP has operated sans an in-house team for the park for more than a decade.
The venue's rebirth is also accompanied by an added safeguard, as the DLNR's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) sets up its new field station within the park confines to beef up security, this maneuver arrives in the wake of a burglary in the hall in December where glass was shattered and expensive tools with materials disappeared, also picnic tables and benches mysteriously vanished – not to mention they smothered two arson attempts in recent weeks; DOCARE's burgeoning presence aims to clamp down on such incidents and magnify general public safety, says DSP Administrator Curt Cottrell in a statement obtained by DLNR.
Continuity is a key theme as well, with existing park partners like The Puakea Foundation, captained by Uncle Bobby Puakea, maintaining its curatorship agreement, ensuring that the Halau waʻa remains a hub for restoration and education on waʻa or traditional canoes, with paddling training and workshops now folded into its tableau. The banquet hall's reopening marks new beginnings for Heʻeia State Park, spotlighting cultural ties, traditions, and ultimately, the unfolding opportunities for community engagement and guardianship for Kealohi Point, a cherished nook in Kāne’ohe Bay.
