A high-speed police pursuit originating in Bedford Heights concluded with a violent collision and subsequent arrest in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood. The chase began shortly after 11 p.m., sparked by a Bedford Heights police officer witnessing a vehicle running a red light at Libby and Aurora Roads, according to information from Cleveland19. The Bedford Heights Police Department reported that the driver, identified as Kavontae Sedrick Doyle, chose to flee westbound on Aurora Road to I-480 W rather than adhere to the initial traffic stop.
The pursuit reached dangerous velocities, as the chase exceeded speeds of 100 mph, and the driver committed numerous traffic violations before crashing into a construction area on East 49th Street near Fleet Avenue. The site was cordoned off for construction, but Doyle's vehicle careened into a road closed sign and burst into flames, an event conveyed by News 5 Cleveland. Several individuals reportedly fled from the scene after the crash.
Subsequent to a search employing a drone, police located Doyle and another passenger on E. 55th Street. Bedford Heights Police Chief Michael Marotta remarked on the chase's ramifications, acknowledging not only the risks to public safety but also the imperative for internal review within his department. "We always want to catch the bad guy, but we have to take into consideration, 'At what cost?'" Marotta told WKYC. In light of the incident, the department will evaluate whether the pursuit protocol was followed and consider if retraining or discipline is warranted.
Doyle is facing charges including fleeing and eluding and was transported to Bedford Heights Jail. A female passenger, injured during the incident, was found approximately 100 yards from the crash site and received medical attention. The juvenile female involved was released to family members, as per details from Cleveland19, and in the aftermath of the chase, Brooklyn Heights and Cleveland police backed up Bedford Heights officers at the scene.
