A Florida man has been condemned to a 15-year prison term for his part in the distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Nicholes Scott Newman, 42, from Hilliard, received the sentence from Chief United States District Judge Marcia Morales Howard, as reported on the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida website. Following his incarceration, Newman will also have to undergo a 10-year term of supervised release and register as a sex offender.

In June 2024, Newman was identified by an undercover detective to be sharing CSAM within a social media group chat. Court records show that Newman went on to directly send additional CSAM imagery and videos to an undercover detective. The investigation leading to Newman's arrest was a collaborative effort, involving Homeland Security Investigations, Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Clay County Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, and the Northeast Florida INTERCEPT Task Force.

Prior to this sentence, Newman had already faced the law for similar offenses. In 2014, he was convicted for 20 counts of possession of CSAM in Pinellas County, subsequently served time in Florida State Prison, and got released on February 6, 2019. In a quote taken from the U.S. Attorney's Office's website, Homeland Security Investigations Jacksonville Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tim Hemker said, "This predator’s prior conviction did not deter him from continuing to victimize children by distributing vile child sexual abuse material."

The ramifications of Newman's actions are clear: the distribution of CSAM not only perpetuates the suffering of the victims involved but threatens to normalize such materials within certain corners of the internet. The long reach of the law intends to thoroughly prosecute perpetrators and more importantly, work to rescue victims. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Cannizzaro and is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative to aggressively to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
