Hilliard's First Responders Park, a revered site commemorating the sacrifices of the 9/11 heroes, is set for a renovation starting this spring. As reported by the City of Hilliard's official government website, the park at the corner of Main and Center Streets will be closed from the first week of April, with the rejuvenation expected to reach completion by summer.

Existing in a state of disrepair due to weather and exposure to sunlight, the park's concrete, lighting, fountains, and more will undergo a series of updates. Michael Lentz, the city's Landscape Architect, outlined the pressing need for this facelift, saying "the park has served the city well; however, the weather and ultraviolet light has deteriorated the concrete, lighting and fountains." Featuring granite walls with the names of the fallen, a reflecting pool, and a monument honoring fallen officers, all these elements, including the metal sculpture sourced from the World Trade Center's steel, have withstood the test of time and will remain as integral parts of the park's fabric.

In terms of specific improvements, the park will witness a complete replacement of concrete pavement, stencil, and bluestone repainting, total lighting overhaul, trellis support repair, and a new roof plus gate for the mechanical enclosure. The State of Ohio has stepped in with funding, earmarking $800,500 from its One Time Strategic Community Investment Fund, thanks to sponsorship from former State Sen. Stephanie Kunze. Past aside, the renovations anticipate future gatherings, which have become a staple for the community during memorial services on the 9/11 and Peace Officers Memorial Day anniversaries in May.

The conclusion of the renovation will be marked by a rededication ceremony fittingly scheduled for Sept. 11. While waiting to reopen this sacred space that offers solace and a connection to historical memory.
