In a significant crackdown on human trafficking operations in Hillsborough County, 45-year-old Rico Gardner was arrested on charges linked to prostitution and human trafficking following an undercover operation conducted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office; the arrest heralded the rescue of an unnamed victim who had been ensnared in Gardner's control from April through November 2024, according to details released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Gardner, who now faces charges including Transporting for Prostitution and Deriving Support from the Proceeds of Prostitution, is accused of manipulating and forcing the victim to perform commercial sexual acts, withholding vital necessities like food and sleep and inflicting physical violence to maintain coercive control over them, the Sheriff's office was relentless in their investigation and they uncovered disturbing details of Gardner's handling of the situation, specializing in placing online escort ads, negotiating with potential buyers of sex, and transporting the victim to meet these individuals while standing by until each act was completed.
The victim's ordeal, which lasted several months, ended with Gardner's arrest on Tuesday, as reported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, following an extensive investigation that identified Gardner's active role in the coercion and exploitation for sex trafficking; newly charged with Coerce for Commercial Sex Act by Human Trafficking and Forcing Another to Become a Prostitute, Gardner is currently under investigation with the potential for further details to emerge as the case progresses.
Offering accolades to the victim's courage, Sheriff Chad Chronister stated, "Her courage not only liberated herself but also serves as a beacon of hope for others who may be suffering in silence.", this sentiment underscores the harsh reality many face yet also emphasizes the importance of victims stepping forward for both their own sake and to assist authorities in dismantling oppressive operations much like Gardner's, as per the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
