In an ongoing effort to curtail illegal activities and enhance the community's quality of life, Holyoke Police Department officers made multiple arrests this past week, recovering various illegal substances in the process. On March 17 and 18, patrols around South Bridge Street led to the seizure of drugs and the arrest of two individuals with outstanding arrest warrants. The department's initiative to address these so-called 'quality of life' issues once again brought to light the persistent struggle against narcotics in the area.
According to a Facebook post by the Holyoke Police Department, the first incident took place on the evening of March 17 at around 8:35 p.m. Officers Justo Pagan and Joshua Salas were conducting property checks when they discovered approximately nine bags of heroin/fentanyl on a rear porch. The situation escalated later that night when, responding to a gun call, officers pursued and apprehended Jonathan Vergara after a short chase. Vergara, already wanted on multiple arrest warrants, was caught with an additional fifteen bags of heroin.
Continuing their property checks the following night, the police moved to 532 South Bridge Street, where they encountered Francisco Morales. After a brief chase, Sgt. John Flynn, Officers Pagan, and William Lebrun detained Morales, who was in possession of oxycodone pills and a knife. Officer Abelardo Barta then located a backpack containing an extensive cache of narcotics that included more heroin/fentanyl vials and cocaine, along with a small amount of cash. These finds are part of a larger story of the Holyoke Police's commitment to mitigating drug-related issues that plague the neighborhood.
The suspects at the center of these busts, 28-year-old Jonathan Vergara of Springfield and 33-year-old Francisco Morales, also of Springfield, now face various charges. Vergara is charged with possession of a Class A Drug, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and is subject to three outstanding arrest warrants from Springfield, Westfield, and Chicopee District Court. Morales faces charges of possession of a Class B Drug, trespassing, and disorderly conduct.
