Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson has announced the plea of guilt from EVIN ENRIQUE FUNEZ-CRUZ, a 22-year-old Honduran national, on charges related to his reentry to the United States after being deported. According to court documents, FUNEZ-CRUZ was caught in St. Tammany Parish on January 6, 2025. He had previously been deported back to Honduras on June 21, 2024, and his recent unauthorized return has landed him in hot water with federal authorities.
Under the charges of reentry of a removed alien, stipulated under Title 8, United States Code, Sections 1326(a) and (b)(1), FUNEZ-CRUZ could be facing some serious consequences. The penalties up for grabs include up to ten years of imprisonment, a fine that might peak at $250,000, potentially three years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
In a statement made by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Simpson applauded the efforts of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for their work in investigating this particular case. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis of the General Crimes Unit is overseeing the prosecution of FUNEZ-CRUZ.
