Empowering the consumer is at the forefront this week as the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) kicks off National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW). According to a news release shared by the DCCA, they are set to host a free Consumer Protection Fair aimed at doing just that. Scheduled for Thursday, March 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the fair will take place at the State Capitol, providing valuable resources to help the public steer clear of scams and grasp their consumer rights more firmly.
The DCCA Director, Nadine Ando, emphasized the importance of consumer awareness as a shield against deceit and exploitation. "Consumer awareness is the first line of defense against fraud and exploitation. As we commemorate National Consumer Protection Week through our annual fair, the DCCA remains committed to providing the public with the resources and support necessary to navigate the complexities of today’s marketplace," she explained in a statement obtained by DCCA News Release. The event is gathering a host of organizations ranging from government agencies to private sector groups, all converging with the common goal of protecting Hawaii's consumers.
Those attending can expect representation from the Better Business Bureau, Hawaiian Electric Co., and the Honolulu Fire Department, among others. The fair will offer a wide spectrum of information from tax assistance to emergency preparedness, aligning with the varied facets of consumer protection. The collaboration between these organizations signifies the breadth of the network available to the consumer in their quest to remain informed and vigilant against frauds and scams prevalent in today's complex marketplace.
Attendees also have the opportunity to engage with the real estate and financial sectors, the insurance division, and legal aid services such as the Mediation Center of the Pacific. The vast array of participants is a clear indicator of the DCCA's commitment 'to providing the public with the resources and support necessary to navigate the complexities of today’s marketplace.' With topics from navigating Medicare with the Executive Office on Aging – Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), to learning how to protect one's family's assets with the Hawai‘i Family Caregiver Coalition, the fair is set to be an indispensable resource.
The Consumer Protection Week Fair is not only a testament to the dedication of various organizations to consumer welfare but also an invitation to the public to educate themselves and take proactive steps towards safeguarding their rights, interests, and hard-earned money.
