The horse racing community is mourning the loss of one of their own after a tragic accident at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows. Driver Hunter Myers, age 27, passed away due to injuries sustained in the incident, according to WPXI. Initially reported to be in critical condition with a brain injury, his condition ultimately proved fatal.
The accident, which occurred yesterday afternoon during the 11th race, involved six horses. It is reported that a break in stride by one of the horses led to a dangerous chain reaction on the track. In the wake of this event, The Meadows Standardbred Owners Association has canceled racing for the remainder of the week, as reported by PennLive. Myers, an experienced driver who began harness racing at the age of 16, was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, officials said.
A video shared on social media earlier in the year highlighted Myers as one of the top harness racing drivers at The Meadows. The community and fans have been expressing their condolences, and track announcer Roger Huston asked people to "please keep him in your thoughts and prayers," according to remarks reported by CBS News. The Meadows has not stated the incident at the time of this report.
