A second arrest has been made in connection with the deadly shooting that occurred on March 18 at an apartment complex on 7500 Cook Road. Seventeen-year-old Christopher Portillo Luna faces charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to a news release from the City of Houston, the charges were filed following his arrest on Thursday, March 27.
The initial report from the Houston Police Department Homicide Division detailed how patrol officers found Marcos Cotto Torres, aged 41, with a fatal gunshot wound and another man injured; both discovered at the location of the incident after responding to a person-down call, the injured man receiving prompt transportation to an area hospital for his injuries. In the subsequent investigation, witnesses implicated Fernando Amaya, also 17, as an assailant in the shooting and has been charged with murder, among other offenses, as reported by the City of Houston.
Amaya, like Luna, has been charged with murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault—the former for his alleged involvement in the death of Torres. The Houston Police Department located him at a relative's house later on the day of the shooting. After the Harris County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case, official charges were applied against Amaya, as obtained by the City of Houston.
The investigation into the homicide revealed Luna as a second suspect. The Westside Patrol Gang Unit and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force worked together to arrest him. Both suspects were connected to a white SUV, which was seen arriving at and leaving the crime scene, as per the City of Houston. Evidence from the scene helped link the suspects to the crime, leading to Luna’s arrest and charges.
