Over a span of five days, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested nine undocumented immigrants in the Houston area on charges of sex crimes. These arrests were made as part of a joint operation with several agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas Office of Attorney General. According to Click2Houston, the individuals were apprehended between February 24 and February 28 and are subject to removal from the United States due to the gravity of their offenses.
ICE officials have hailed the operation as a success for community safety. "Our local communities are safer as a direct result of this targeted enforcement effort," said ICE Homeland Security Investigations Houston Special Agent in Charge Chad Plantz in a press release referenced by KHOU. The convictions of the arrested individuals vary, spanning from sexual assault to kidnapping, with each offense carrying considerable legal significance.
Notable arrests included a 39-year-old from El Salvador, Florentin Chevez-Luna, who had been deported three times previously, and was apprehended on a criminal arrest warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a child. The list of detainees also features a thrice-deported 61-year-old from Mexico, previously convicted of various crimes including aggravated sexual assault of a minor. Other detainees hailed from nations such as Cuba, Vietnam, and the Philippines, with convictions for serious offenses like sexual battery with a weapon, abduction, and gross sexual imposition with a minor.
These enforcement actions demonstrate ICE's continued commitment to prioritizing the removal of individuals with serious criminal backgrounds. The goal of these operations is to prevent potential reoffenses and ensure public safety by addressing threats effectively.
