In a recent update provided by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, a homicide investigation is underway at the Sacramento County Main Jail following a fight between inmates the evening prior. The altercation resulted in the death of one inmate, who was found unresponsive on the floor after his cellmate triggered the emergency alert system. The deputies responded immediately and attempted resuscitation, but the victim was pronounced dead shortly after by fire personnel.
Further details emerged with the identity of Sergey Gutsu, age 32, as the inmate involved in the fight. Gutsu was subsequently "add booked/arrested earlier this morning about this homicide," according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office follow-up post on Facebook. Gutsu, who had been at the Main Jail since June of last year on an Order to Produce, is already serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for a 2015 murder and an additional 51 years for a robbery and attempted murder.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has not released the identity of the deceased, following standard protocol. Details are limited as detectives and investigators work to uncover what happened in the jail cell.
