An unfortunate string of events unfolded at the Maple Street Correctional Center yesterday, with an incarcerated 25-year-old white man found unresponsive by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office personnel. The man, housed in a general population pod, was discovered at about 4:50 p.m., after which medical staff stationed inside the institution continued the lifesaving measures initiated by the Sheriff's Office but were unable to resuscitate him, as per the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
In the moments following the discovery, the San Mateo County Coroner's Office, along with the District Attorney's Office and Sheriff's Detectives, were summoned to begin independent investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death. After receiving the routine safety check, these preparatory lifesaving acts were admirably performed, but the man was pronounced dead at the facility by EMS personnel. The man's identity remains undisclosed until the next of kin are notified and the Coroner’s Office completes all necessary identifications.
The Sheriff's Office acknowledged the incident might spark public concern, assuring transparency once the findings of the ongoing investigations come to light. "We understand the concerns and questions that may arise from any in-custody death," the statement read. "While the independent investigations are ongoing, we want to assure the community that once the investigations are complete, the Sheriff’s Office will make the findings public."
