Minneapolis is ramping up for its annual spring refresh, with the largest community service event in the city happening on April 19. The 2025 Minneapolis Earth Day Cleanup invites residents to clear the winter's accumulation of trash and debris from over 40 sites across the city's park system. Since 2008, this effort has rallied over 23,000 community members who have collected upwards of 165,000 pounds of garbage, making a visible difference in their local environment.
The event, which requires no pre-registration, simply asks volunteers to choose a locale and show up at 9:30 am, ready to roll up their sleeves and help out. With the promise of supplied bags and gloves, participants just need to come prepared with comfortable shoes and their own water and snacks. As announced by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, parking enforcement at MPRB meters and lots won't kick in until 1 pm that day.
Aiming to make the process as smooth as possible, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's bulletin provides a map of all the clean-up sites and notes that all ages are welcome at the event. Children, however, should have adult supervision. For any troubling finds, like sharp objects or anything potentially dangerous, volunteers are instructed to refrain from handling them and instead report their location to a site coordinator.
Not everyone can make it on the big day, but the spirit of community service need not be confined to a single date. Those who can't join on April 19 but wish to contribute to the city's upkeep can reach out to the City of Minneapolis at any time of the year for information and supplies. Volunteers, contributing any amount of time to the event, are appreciated — a sentiment echoed by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board when thanking residents for their involvement.
