Last Thursday, an urgent rescue operation unfolded along the Colorado River, brought to public attention by a social media post from the LVMPD Search and Rescue team. The LVMPD Search and Rescue crew, responding aboard their AIR1 helicopter, raced against the clock to reach several miles south of Nelson's Landing, where an overturned boat was discovered by an Arizona Border Patrol helicopter returning from Las Vegas. The Border Patrol crew managed to land nearby and make contact with an individual in need of medical aid, who reported the boat had wrecked the day before.
The treacherously steep terrain prevented the Border Patrol team from reaching the patient, compelling them to call for back-up. Striving to quickly provide the necessary assistance, AIR1 was dispatched, swooping in to insert a single SAR officer onto the scene. In a collaborative effort detailed in a Instagram update by LVMPD Search and Rescue, National Park Service (NPS) rangers made their approach by boat and commenced emergency treatment for a head injury sustained by the stranded individual.
Navigating downstream, the NPS rangers successfully transported the patient to an accessible shoreline. The injured party was then handed over to the SAR personnel, who facilitated the crucial next leg of the rescue. After receiving initial care from the rangers, the patient was airlifted by AIR1 to the Boulder City airport. The Boulder City Fire Department was standing by, ready to take over the patient's care, as per the LVMPD Search and Rescue.
The individual was then moved swiftly to a nearby hospital to receive further treatment. The operation underscored the seamless coordination between multiple agencies. "Great work by all of our partner agencies involved in the operation!" was the resounding acclaim shared by LVMPD Search and Rescue on their post. With the patient’s condition stabilized and the rescue concluded successfully, the unity and prompt response of the different forces on the ground and in the air exemplified the dedication and expertise of the professionals looking out for public safety in the region.
