In a recent update provided by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, a juvenile male is now in custody following the discovery of an explosive device inside a backpack at Ponderosa High School. The incident unfolded yesterday morning when a School Resource Officer (SRO) received a tip concerning a student allegedly carrying a suspicious device, the subsequent response led to the detainment of the student and isolation of the backpack containing the item in question, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
After identifying the questionable device within the student's backpack, the bomb squad was brought in to further investigate and the decision to evacuate the school was made as a precautionary measure ensuring the safety of all present, the school's clearance was completed with the aid of explosive detection dogs from various agencies and by 11:40 a.m., no additional devices were found and students were allowed to return, as detailed by Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Residents can be assured that with the aid of the ATF Denver Field Division and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the premises have been deemed safe. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the collective effort in a statement, "We appreciate the assistance of the ATF Denver Field Division and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office."
