Authorities in Kalamazoo have arrested a 43-year-old man accused of setting fire to an unhoused person's belongings last night. The suspect, who is also believed to be a member of the homeless community, reportedly ignited the victim's blankets and shopping cart. At the same time, they were asleep under the Kalamazoo Public Library overhang on South Rose Street. The incident occurred just before 11:40 p.m., and the resulting fire caused damage to the exterior of the building.

Despite the potentially tragic outcomes, the person under siege was able to extinguish the blanket before suffering any injuries. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) quickly extinguished the shopping cart fire, which had already begun to damage the building, FOX 17 Online reported. "Our officers responded quickly and prevented what could have been a devastating situation," said Chief David Boysen, according to the same source.

The man taken into custody is said to have a history of trespassing on vacant properties, WZZM 13 shared, adding that he was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail. His identity is expected to be released following arraignment. KDPS underscores the gravity of the act, deeming it a dangerous and intentional arson.

The KDPS Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the arson fire, and authorities are seeking additional information.
