Kauai's Vidinha Stadium is set to undergo a significant transformation, with doors closing to the public this Friday, March 7, as the island embarks on the Vidinha Stadium Improvements Project, Phase 1. The heart of this project pivots around the replacement of the old field and track, as well as the installation of a new video board. Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami extended his thanks to the collaborative efforts of local leaders, educational bodies, and the community in a statement, highlighting that the upgrades promise "to ensure that our community will have access to a world-class facility that promotes recreation, fitness, and healthy living," a statement obtained by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The construction, spearheaded by Co-Ha Builders Inc. dba Applied Surfacing Technology and Fukunaga & Associates Inc., is expected to not only upgrade the stadium but also significantly enhance the sports infrastructure, with a projected completion in December 2025. While residents and visitors might be temporarily inconvenienced, the project's price tag of $12.2 million signals a serious investment in the future of Kauai's recreational facilities. With the demolition and upgrade on the docket, the stadium will remain closed for the entirety of the renovation period, as reported by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Amidst the machinery and materials ready to descend upon the space, the scope of these improvements is extensive. The stadium is to be outfitted with a synthetic turf field, a synthetic track, state-of-the-art track implements, and a video board designed to meet the needs of various athletic events and community gatherings. The old scoreboard and existing fixtures will make way for these new installations, ensuring that participants and spectators alike are greeted with the very best upon their return.
