The Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) has reached a significant milestone in its endeavor to deploy fiber internet service throughout its service territory. Reaching the halfway point, KUB has now made high-speed internet service accessible to 84,000 residential and business customers in East Tennessee, according to a report from WVLT. This achievement brings the region one step closer to broader connectivity, with the next phase of the project anticipated to commence in 2026.
KUB's fiber initiative is seen as a critical response to the evident need for reliable internet connectivity that was sharply highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. "The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that high-speed internet was no longer a luxury, but a necessity for individuals and communities to thrive," said KUB President and CEO Gabriel J. Bolas II in a statement obtained by WBIR. The utility company purports to provide "the fastest internet possible" backed by local customer support. Rural areas, often underserved by other internet providers, have especially been prioritized in KUB's installation process.
Looking forward, KUB Fiber plans to expand its services into additional communities. This year's expansion will include Seymour, Strawberry Plains, Holston Hills and parts of North Knox County, details a report by WBIR. The fiber optic infrastructure not only offers higher speeds and better reliability but is also considered to be more environmentally friendly.
Complementing their service rollout, KUB has launched a community-oriented initiative dubbed ConnectED, which offers free fiber services to income-eligible K -12 student households in Knox County. This program, funded by Knox County and the city of Knoxville, serves to help bridge the digital divide for students in need. It is currently aiding 182 students, as noted by Knox News. A recent opinion piece in the publication reflects on the broader impact of KUB Fiber, emphasizing the eventual access all KUB electric customers will have to "the fastest internet in town" and the improvements in electric reliability that the fiber technology will generate upon the project's completion in 2027.
Overall, the half-completion of the KUB Fiber rollout represents a promising development for connectivity in East Tennessee, with significant implications for local communities' access to high-quality internet services and the potential socio-economic benefits that such connectivity brings.
