The City of Las Cruces has issued a safety update concerning light poles at various sports facilities, directly affecting local sports schedules and community recreational activities. According to the City of Las Cruces, today, collaborative efforts between the Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments have led to the temporary closure of fields at the Hadley Sports Complex and Apodaca Softball Fields, after the potential instability of certain light poles was identified.
The assessment conducted by the City pinpointed that the Ron Galla field will not require pole replacements and is expected to resume normal operations on March 31, the same day Maag Park will reopen for daytime play following the removal of its problematic poles, while remaining fields Paz and Harty are still undergoing the necessary disposal and cleanup processes and are touted for impending opening for daytime play in the weeks to come. The situation at Apodaca Softball Fields remains tentative, as pole removal began only this week, and a reopening schedule has not been established.
Instead of the removed poles, barrels will mark these areas during field use to ensure the safety of those attending games or practices, which are, for obvious reason,s to be avoided. The City has communicated that it will be working with local leagues to arrange new schedules, accommodating intermittent closures as new poles are installed and the commitment stands the assurance of field access while upholding safety standards.
Mirroring these measures, the City has confirmed that other sport facilities including Apodaca Park baseball fields, Burn Lake soccer fields, High Noon fields 1-5, Provencio Van Damme fields and East Mesa Public Recreation Complex fields have not been impacted by the pole concerns, keeping them fully operational and open for community use.
