The gathering, which drew more than 2,500 participants, featured both a Peace Walk through local apartment complexes and a Family Fun Festival at Cashman Park. Commissioner Justin Jones, alongside Commissioners Tick Segerblom and April Becker, called the event a "powerful reminder" of the power of unity within the community, according to a statement from Clark County's official website.
Starting at a 7-11 parking lot, the Peace Walk aimed to not only foster a sense of safety and camaraderie, but also to directly aid those in need by distributing 500 backpacks, meals, and other essentials. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's presence, both on bikes and in patrol cars, sought to safely guide participants through the event's locations. It was a concerted effort to fully engage local residents in an initiative to to better ensure a stronger, safer community, as reported by the Clark County.
The Family Fun Festival that followed was a hit with attendees, featuring free rides, games, and food distribution courtesy of the Dream Center of Las Vegas. Over 20,000 pounds of food were handed out, further reinforcing the day's commitment to community support. Educational perks were also part of the mix, as the CCSD Book Bus gave away over 500 books to young readers—a testament to the area's dedication to literacy and learning, as per the Clark County.
The drive behind these initiatives stems from a recognized need to address increased gang activity within the Pennwood/Arville area, particularly around institutions like Clark High School and Cashman Middle School. As Commissioner Jones put it, the day's events symbolized a "movement toward unity, hope, and resilience," signifying a collective approach to tackling local challenges head-on, as stated by the Clark County.
The collaboration between Clark County commissioners, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the CCSD Family Engagement Team, and numerous community organizations underscores a sustained commitment to not just occasionally support, but to consistently build a community where safety and opportunity are accessible to all its members.
