Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department provided a detailed briefing on the officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred last Saturday, which resulted in the death of 68-year-old Robert Fanello. According to the official LVMPD report, at 1:52 p.m. on the said date, LVMPD received an urgent call from the Suicide Hotline about Fanello, who was armed and suicidal, and revealed he had been assaulting his wife over the past two days.

The situation escalated quickly upon the officers' arrival at the scene, as Fanello, not willing to relinquish his firearm, fired a shot because he felt the officers were taking too long to reach his home. As the situation developed, Officer Larry Jones and a colleague positioned themselves strategically across the street from Fanello’s residence to provide updates and maintain a visual on the suspect. While an immediate action team tried to deescalate the tension and convince Fanello to drop his weapon, their attempt were met with defiance.

The confrontation reached a critical point when Fanello raised his firearm in the direction of responding officers. In response, Officer Jones discharged his weapon, striking Fanello, who was then apprehended and required immediate medical attention. The injured man was transported to UMC hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
