Louisiana's ecosystem for innovation received a notable boost with the recent announcement from Louisiana Economic Development (LED) regarding their new division, Louisiana Innovation(LA.IO), soon after the Innovation Day at Super Bowl LIX. This division is dedicated to transforming Louisiana into a hub for high-growth, tech startups, as reported by Opportunity Louisiana. LED's fresh initiative, in partnership with the Edward Lowe Foundation, is already making waves with the introduction of the Louisiana Growth Network's inaugural Innovation Cohort.
Launching with a diverse assembly of entrepreneurs from varying industries, the program aims to tackle significant business challenges like market expansion, with Josh Fleig, LED’s first Chief Innovation Officer, under the guiding belief that, "When the right people are involved and connected, we know we can transform key business challenges into actionable plans," he told Opportunity Louisiana. The five entrepreneurs entering this program were invited to a three-day retreat designed to spur conversation and innovation in Springfield.
Dan Ducoté, a savvy Entrepreneur Emeritus for the Edward Lowe Foundation and owner of the retreat facility on the Tickfaw River, brings a wealth of experience to the table. He, alongside others, will aid the participants through a series of roundtable meetings geared towards accelerating growth in their respective sectors. Each entrepreneur brings a unique contribution to the cohort, ranging from structural piling repair solutions to technologically advanced platforms aimed at minimizing carbon footprints, according to Opportunity Louisiana.
Highlighting the passion for peer learning within the entrepreneurial community, Colleen Killen-Roberts, vice president of entrepreneurship at the Edward Lowe Foundation, articulated the essence of the program: "Our founder, Ed Lowe, believed that entrepreneurs learn best from other growth-minded business owners, so peer learning and forging new connections are key components of the program," she said. With a nod to Louisiana's potential, Killen-Roberts expressed her excitement working with the inaugural cohort's five companies, which she describes as exemplars of innovation and cutting-edge technology. LED plans to continue this momentum by launching additional Innovation Cohorts in the future.
Formerly known as Small Business Services, the newly rebranded Louisiana Growth Network sharpens its focus on nurturing the high potential businesses of Louisiana. They are positioning themselves as a cradle for entrepreneurial success, ensuring that local founders gain access to the necessary resources and guidance to compete on the bigger stage. As Louisiana marches forward into this new chapter, it is poised to become a leader in the innovation space, further bolstered by programs like the one LED has just debuted.
