Major road construction is set to reshape the daily commutes for thousands of drivers in Livonia and Plymouth Township, as a two-year, $140 million overhaul of M-14 at Interstate 96 gets underway. The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced, as reported by The Detroit News, that starting Monday, work will result in significant lane closures and detours, including the shuttering of eastbound M-14 to northbound and southbound I-275 among other ramps.

With plans for a full reconstruction and updating of infrastructure, the project will leave eastbound M-14 narrowed to one lane from west of Beck Road to Levan Road, and westbound M-14 will maintain two lanes from Levan to Beck. Alongside roadwork, the project will entail replacing drainage and storm sewer systems, sign installations, and water main relocation. About 125,000 drivers traverse this section near the I-275 interchange on a daily basis, a point emphasized by FOX 2 Detroit in their coverage of the affair.

As part of the final preparation before the heavy lifting begins, lane restrictions and closures have been in effect, highlighted by the full closure of westbound M-14 from I-275 to Sheldon Road over a recent weekend. "Traffic control for this project has been carefully considered," Michigan Department of Transportation stated, underlining the intricate planning involved in managing a project of this scale. The reconstruction also promises to bring technological advancements with the installation of new Intelligent Transportation System Technology, reported by FOX 2 Detroit.

Detour routes for affected drivers have been made available, directing westbound M-14 traffic via southbound I-275, westbound I-94, and northbound US-23. Those heading eastbound will follow the opposite route via southbound US-23, eastbound I-94, and northbound I-275 back to M-14/I-96. While this initial stage of the project deals with eastbound lanes, the bulk of the work on the westbound side is scheduled for 2026.
