South Miami-Dade is dealing with a major grass fire that has burned 700 acres, according to the Florida Forest Service. The fire started near Southwest 344th Street and 117th Avenue and is currently 60% contained. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is on the scene, with Air Rescue South assisting by performing water drops, as reported by WSVN.

Forest Area Supervisor Kevin MacEwen told WSVN, "It’s a very dangerous area, a very muddy area. Our equipment that has gone in there to try to stop the fire has been stuck."

The fire is located west of Turkey Point, an area with no nearby structures. According to NBC Miami, there is no immediate danger to buildings or homes. The fire was initially 90% contained but flared up again yesterday afternoon.

MacEwen warned about potential smoke-related health issues and road closures, advising Miami residents to keep their windows closed, especially in the morning when smoke settles.

As the first large fire of the dry season (October to May), officials are urging caution for those living near wooded areas. MacEwen told WSVN, “If you’re operating UTVs or ATVs, or you’re having a barbecue, it’s so dry. If you’re having a small recreational fire in your yard, be ready to put it out. Be careful. I wouldn’t recommend having a fire.”

No injuries have been reported so far, and crews continue working to control the fire. Police have set up blockades on nearby roads to ensure public safety.
