As part of an ongoing effort to overhaul infrastructure, a substantial change on the Parkway East in Monroeville is set to begin, significantly affecting traffic patterns for months to come. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is implementing a traffic crossover starting tonight, which will reroute eastbound (outbound) I-376 traffic onto the westbound (inbound) lanes, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. Preparations for the adjustment will result in the parkway being reduced to one lane in each direction between the Penn Hills and Monroeville exits starting at 9 p.m. this evening.
John Myler, PennDOT's District 11 Senior Assistant Construction Manager, foresees that the new traffic layout, which condenses driving lanes to 11 feet in width, will be noticeable to drivers, especially if you're driving alongside trucks or there happen to be two trucks passing through that crossover at the same time. This update is a segment of the $70 million Parkway East Betterment Project and is expected to run through the fall of 2026.
Confirming the intensive scope of the project, TribLIVE reported that the work includes superstructure replacement, two bridge rehabilitations, and six bridge preservation projects. Commuters must navigate the new configuration until mid-July when westbound lanes will experience a similar crossover to accommodate construction on that side of the bridge.
