
Atlanta is reeling from a grievous New Year's Day incident, as police have detained 41-year-old Byron Davis in connection with a fatal shooting at LaCura Bar and Bistro. On the early morning of January 1, after celebrations took an ugly turn, gunshots claimed the life of 28-year-old Kirey R. Thompson and wounded two others outside the bar located at 1919 Metropolitan Parkway SW, as per reports from FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the altercation that escalated into gunfire with at least three shooters involved started within the establishment and then spilled into the parking lot, where the security attempted to quell the violence but ultimately shots were fired, causing not just human loss but also damage to multiple vehicles nearby. Davis faces several grave charges, including Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and Aggravated Assault.
The tragic fallout of what commenced as a dispute among patrons reached its denouement on Tuesday when authorities apprehended Davis. FOX 5 Atlanta revealed that the conflict began inside LaCura Bar and Bistro, but after the removal of the involved parties by security, the contention reignited outside, bringing forth the deadly exchange of fire.
Davis, now in custody at Fulton County Jail, is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports added detail that a security guard was among those wounded in the leg. The owner of LaCura Bar and Bistro defended the safety measures of the venue pointing out the use of a metal detector and the presence of several security personnel both inside and around the venue.
Awaiting his next court appearance, the legal outcomes of the charges against Davis remain undetermined. The community continues to assess the impact of the incident, while the investigation is ongoing to determine how the events transpired despite existing security measures.
