A 59-year-old man was found dead at a homeless shelter in the Bronx, as stated by the NYPD yesterday. According to News 12, the unnamed individual was discovered unconscious at the facility located at 345 East 146th Street in Mott Haven after midnight. He had sustained trauma to his head and face.
The man was quickly transported to Lincoln Hospital, where he was soon pronounced dead. An investigation is currently underway to precisely determine his cause of death, which has not yet been established by the city's medical examiner's office. As part of the ongoing investigation, no arrests have yet been made. The NYPD reported the victim was a resident of the low-barrier shelter operated by Comunilife, a noted nonprofit organization, according to state and city records.
In response to this incident, Blanca Ramirez, the president and CEO of Comunilife, extended her condolences. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at our Bronx Safe Haven facility. On behalf of everyone at Comunilife, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the resident who passed away," Ramirez said in a statement obtained by Gothamist. She emphasized the safety of their residents as a top priority and committed to fully cooperating with law enforcement to aid the investigation.
Statistics from the NYPD's 40th Precinct, which encompasses Mott Haven, show that there have been two homicides this year through March 2, an amount which matches the count from the same time the previous year.
