A man is in critical condition following a shooting involving an NYPD detective in Brooklyn's Flatlands neighborhood, an incident resulting from an apparent street-side argument that escalated when a box cutter came into play. The altercation occurred near Utica Avenue and Avenue K just before 2 p.m. yesterday, with the detective firing his weapon after repeated warnings to the armed man were ignored, as reported by CBS News.
Two plainclothes detectives in an unmarked car came upon the scene while two men were engaged in a verbal dispute, one of whom threw an object at the other's car which resulted in the driver exiting his vehicle to confront the pedestrian, according to police statements, the pedestrian was seen on video throwing the object, these events preceding the unfortunate shooting. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated, "The detective then was forced to discharge one round from his firearm, striking the subject in his torso," and emphasized the immediate medical assistance called to the scene as per Gothamist.
The suspect, who according to Kenny has a history of mental illness and prior encounters with law enforcement dating back to 2017 and 2018, was holding the box cutter and did not heed the detectives' clear commands to relinquish the weapon. The detectives, having identified themselves and persistently directed the man to drop the cutter, perceived his refusal and advancement as a direct threat to both the detective and the other individual involved in the initial argument.
After the shot was fired, police officers provided first aid before EMS arrived and transported the man to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition, the NYPD's investigation of the event is ongoing, while the detectives involved were also assessed at an area hospital as a precaution, this situation is further complicated given the suspect's mental health background creating a dynamic where force intersected with profound vulnerability.
