A devastating structure fire erupted in Pico-Union on Saturday afternoon, tragically resulting in the death of a male in his 50s. According to LAFD's incident alert, the fire broke out on the second floor of a two-story craftsman-style home located at 1215 S Westlake Avenue. Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department were dispatched at 01:04 P.M. and swiftly transitioned into offensive mode to combat the blaze.
Despite the valiant efforts of the 32 firefighters on the scene, extinguishing the fire in about 12 minutes, a critical civilian injury was reported during the primary search of the premises. The victim, approximately a 50-year-old male, was discovered and immediately received advanced life-saving care, as detailed by LAFD's knockdown announcement. Unfortunately, the man whom firefighters pulled from the burning room was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Following the incident, LAFD Arson has initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, which is customary protocol whenever there is a serious injury or fatality involved. Any inquiries regarding the incident are being directed to the expertise of the LA County Medical Examiner, who is responsible for determining the cause of death and the victim's identification, the department's follow-up alert stated.
