A 58-year-old man was injured in an incident on an NYC subway train yesterday afternoon, where he was stabbed and bitten. The attack, which occurred around 3 p.m. on a northbound L train at the Graham Avenue station in Williamsburg, followed a verbal dispute over a seat, as reported by CBS News. The victim was hurried to Bellevue Hospital and is in serious, yet stable condition.
The suspect, who has thus far evaded capture, was described by police as a man dressed in all black and wearing a ski mask. While canvassing the neighborhood for video evidence last night, no arrests have been made. According to a ABC7 New York report, delays affected the L train service in both directions, which have since resumed normal operation.
In contrast to this incident, statistics from the NYPD indicate that subway crime has decreased by more than 26% compared to last year. Governor Kathy Hochul recently highlighted the improvements in safety and surveillance. "I put cameras in all the subway trains. They said it's going to take two years, I said you're gonna get it done now. Every single car has a camera to keep an eye on things," Governor Hochul asserted in a statement that CBS News obtained the day before the stabbing.
Raha Talebinejat, a subway rider, speaking to CBS News, expressed their concern: "To see that on the train, it doesn't make me want to ride the train, but I don't really have a choice unless I'm paying for an Uber back and forth." This reflects the concern of many regarding the occasional incidents of violence on public transit.
