Earlier today in Midtown Manhattan, a disturbing act erupted as a man was set on fire on a busy street corner. The NYPD is actively searching for the suspect involved in this attack, which took place around 3:55 a.m. at the intersection of 41st Street and 7th Avenue. According to ABC7NY, the 49-year-old victim reported that a male assailant approached him, threw a liquid on him, and then proceeded to set him ablaze.
The victim, who sustained severe burns to his face and arms, was assisted by officers from the Midtown South Precinct and later transported to the hospital in stable condition. These officers, who were in the area at the time of the incident, quickly used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames surrounding the man. According to AMNY, the victim is expected to survive his injuries after being taken to Cornell Hospital.
While the suspect remains at large, police describe him as wearing blue clothing. No further details have yet been disclosed regarding the identity of the suspect. Steven Ortiz, a city resident, spole to ABC7NY: "Just listening to all these things, especially with what happens on the train, in the subway, I don't know what's going on with people who just want to light people on fire." He added, "I don't understand, just very inhumane. Especially in the middle of Times Square, it's crazy, it doesn't make any sense."
The arson in Times Square follows a similar incident months earlier, in which 57-year-old Debrina Kawam was fatally burned while sleeping on a Coney Island F train. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, was arrested and charged with her murder. The NYPD is continuing its investigation and is asking the public to provide any information that might help identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for Sunday’s attack. Tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers, online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or through X @NYPDTips, with confidentiality assured for those who come forward, AMNY reported.
