The Maryville Police Department has introduced a new K-9 member with a specialized skill set. Named K-9 Java, this black English Labrador retriever is trained to sniff out electronic storage devices such as cell phones, hard drives, and micro SD cards.

The dog, who works alongside Lieutenant Rod Fernandez, can detect Triphenylphosphine Oxide, a chemical used in the manufacturing of electronics to prevent overheating. Java's abilities will be employed in the battle against crimes like human trafficking and the pursuit of child predators to uncover digital evidence that could otherwise remain hidden by offenders. Canines trained in electronic storage detection are becoming increasingly important tools for law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Besides his primary role as an electronic detection expert, K-9 Java is cross-trained to comfort victims and children, functioning as a support dog. This dual capability extends further to serve the well-being of MRPD personnel and the local community, as confirmed by the Maryville Police Department.

The acquisition of Java was made possible by OUR Rescue, a global non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating human trafficking and child exploitation, financial support for this K-9 unit initiative was provided by OUR Rescue as cited in the reports from the aforementioned news outlets; the police's social media update also notes that the organization's larger mission is to fight against these severe crimes.
