Maui Doctor Arrested, Accused of Attempted Murder of Wife at Oahu's Pali LookoutSource: Honolulu Police Department

A Maui doctor has been taken into custody following allegations of an attempted murder on his wife during a hike at Pali Lookout, Oahu. According to KHON2, the Honolulu Police Department arrested 46-year-old Gerhardt Konig after a foot chase near Pali Highway at approximately 6:45 p.m. on March 24. The suspect, who is facing pending charges, is believed to have pushed his wife off a hiking trail and struck her with a rock.

Earlier in the day, KHON2 reported that the victim was hospitalized in critical condition with serious head and facial injuries. It has been alleged that Konig, an anesthesiologist, attacked his wife with closed fists and an object during their morning excursion. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources responded to the incident by closing the Nu’uanu Pali State Wayside indefinitely.

Following these serious allegations, Maui Health has suspended Dr. Konig pending an investigation. In a statement obtained by KITV, Maui Health expressed its commitment to patient safety: "We have been made aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr. Konig has been suspended from the Medical Staff pending investigation." It was further emphasized that as Dr. Konig is employed by an independent entity, Maui Health will offer full cooperation to the authorities.

Police had initially released a description of the suspect to the public, urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact law enforcement. Per KHON2, Konig was last spotted at Pali Lookout around 10:30 a.m. on the day of the alleged crime, dressed in a light gray shirt and blue shorts, and carrying a black bag. The suspect is described as being 5'9" tall and weighing 160 lbs., with brown hair and green eyes.
