Residents of Maui County looking to enhance their emergency preparedness will have a valuable opportunity next month. The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is hosting a free Emergency Preparedness Expo at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului on April 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This public education event will feature more than 30 partnering agencies offering disaster preparedness information. Attendees can expect insightful speakers and the chance to engage with various community resources.
With a mantra emphasizing collective strength—“Always Preparing, Stronger Together: Building a Resilient Maui Nui”—the expo aligns with Tsunami Awareness Month and addresses the unique needs of an island community. According to the MEMA announcement, disaster readiness can significantly cut back on risks and damage should the unforeseen strike. MEMA Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, seen reinforcing this notion, states, “Emergency preparedness is crucial in Maui County, where being ready for the unexpected can significantly reduce risks and minimize damages.” He adds to the collective imperative, noting that MEMA's "newly formed team remains committed to supporting the community in preparedness, response, and resiliency—because we are stronger together."
The expo will feature free prizes and giveaways, while MEMA staff will assist residents in signing up for MEMA Alert, the agency’s emergency notification service. For more details about the event, including specific presenters or participating agencies, residents can visit the MEMA website or call (808) 270-7285.
