Plans for a wellness hub in DC’s Ward 8 have advanced, with Mayor Muriel Bowser announcing Therme Group’s Therme DC as the selected proposal for the redevelopment of Poplar Point. The project aims to stimulate economic growth along the Anacostia waterfront by transforming 15 acres into a health and wellness destination that will include thermal baths, saunas, and interactive art installations. According to a statement from the Office of the Mayor, Therme Group plans to create a space that integrates nature and wellness with the urban environment of the capital.

The Therme DC project is expected to generate $1.5 billion in tax revenue over 25 years and create thousands of jobs during construction and in permanent positions. Robert Hanea, Chairman and CEO of Therme Group, expressed appreciation for Mayor Bowser's vision for Poplar Point, as the District proceeds with the necessary land transfer and environmental assessments. The plan includes a riverfront park and mixed-use development areas aimed at strengthening community connections and enhancing the green infrastructure of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Mayor Bowser has introduced the FY25 Green Book, which provides guidance on procurement opportunities for local DC businesses. With over $1.1 billion spent annually with DC businesses, the Green Book is a key resource for fostering local economic growth. The initiative is designed to improve transparency and support DC businesses in competing for larger contracts, as explained by DSLBD Director Rosemary Suggs-Evans during the announcement.

The city’s economic development is supported by tax abatements awarded to two commercial-to-residential projects under the Housing in Downtown program, adding over 200 housing units to the city center, including a portion designated as affordable. Additionally, the Vitality Fund is contributing to the district's workforce by supporting the creation and retention of hundreds of jobs and leasing substantial office space in the downtown area. "Created by Mayor Bowser, the Vitality Fund is a multi-year, performance-based incentive program designed to support companies in target industries that are actively planning to relocate, expand, or retain their physical location and create new jobs in the District," as stated in the announcement by the Office of the Mayor.

The introduction of Therme DC aligns with global wellness trends, and Therme Group's international portfolio reflects its focus on integrating wellness into urban environments. With an established presence in Europe and upcoming projects in other major cities, Therme Group combines technology, nature, and wellness to influence the urban landscape, aiming to provide holistic health solutions to a broad range of residents.
