Following a crime spree that led to a high-tension standoff in Southaven, 20-year-old Memphis resident Lamottis Simms Jr. has been convicted, FOX13 Memphis reports. In the events that unfolded, Simms played a critical role in the series of crimes that began in Horn Lake and garnered attention with a viral video showcasing Simms leaping over fences along Interstate 55. Simms pleaded guilty to the attempt to take the motor vehicle and possession of stolen property (25K or more), and as a result, received a sentence of 25 years with 13 years to serve.
According to the Action News 5 account, the incident started with a chase for a stolen vehicle and, ended in a 10-hour standoff in a Southaven warehouse. At one point during the confrontation, a suspect began firing at officers, escalating the situation further. Although Simms was not identified as the shooter, his involvement in these criminal activities was significant enough to warrant the lengthy sentence handed down by the courts.
DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton did not mince words when commenting on the case. "Lamottis Simms Jr. can now practice his acrobat skills behind bars for the next decade plus, where he will have plenty of time to think about the reckless danger he brought to our community," Barton said, as noted by WREG. He went on to address Simms' co-defendant, Franshawn Brown, indicating that prosecution efforts would continue with similar rigor. "And his partner can join him after we are done with him," Barton added.
Both Simms and Brown were arrested on site, and their charges include conspiracy to commit murder on law enforcement and receiving stolen property, as per FOX13 Memphis. No injuries were reported during the standoff or arrest.
