Mentor, Ohio, is bracing itself for a transformation of its favorite gathering spot, Civic Center Park, with a series of upgrades slated for this year. City Manager Kenneth J. Filipiak laid out the blueprint for the park's facelift during the State of the City address, and for those attached to the current landscape, say your goodbyes now—change is en route.
First, trees are already being toppled to make way for the new developments – an act that’s caused some raised eyebrows among locals. Two basketball courts will spring up on the skatepark site on Munson Road, alongside a somewhat robust 152-space parking lot. As basketball scores a double-playground upgrade and the park accrues more parking space, the existing single court will transform into a triad of pickleball courts – an interesting shuffle of athletic venues. According to City of Mentor officials, the parking is on track for completion this summer.
Next, let's talk waterworks. The city plans to erect a 42-foot-tall waterslide structure, with three individual slides cascading down its sides. With construction set to start this spring, the race against the calendar begins to finish by summertime. Young'uns and young-at-heart, put on your swim caps and prepare for the plunge.
Swimmer’s nostalgia is on the horizon, too, because as the current swim season waves goodbye, the existing buildings at the Civic Center Pool area will face demolition. A new complex will rise in their stead, knitting together facilities such as restrooms, a locker area, a concession stand, and a sheltered dining space. The expansion isn't confined to the structures, though, as the pool pad and splash pad area are also set to grow. These enhancements are geared to serve the local community for decades – or at least, so is the pitch by city planners.
All said and done, Mentor’s Civic Center Park is getting more than just a fresh coat of paint. It’s a reboot of recreational space, and if all goes to plan, the dust should settle in time to christen these new additions before the summer sun takes its bow.
