The Metropolitan Police Department recently apprehended a suspect for a burglary incident that took place last year in Southeast D.C., according to a news release. The burglary occurred on October 12, 2024, around 2:49 a.m., where police were called to the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue after a report that an individual had entered a residence, assaulted the occupant, and made off with a cell phone.
Several months after the crime, on Friday, members from the United States Capitol Police stopped the suspect during a routine traffic check, leading to an arrest under a D.C. Superior Court warrant, the report from the Metropolitan Police describes the suspect was armed with a handgun during the time of the burglary which adds a serious note to the case.
The investigation that followed has resulted in the formal charge of Burglary in the First Degree for 49-year-old Shani Cole of Southeast D.C. The arrest and charges come as a part of the MPD's ongoing efforts to mitigate crime in the D.C. area.
The Metropolitan Police Department has credited the partnership and assistance of the United States Capitol Police for the successful apprehension of the suspect: "The Metropolitan Police Department would like to thank the United States Capitol Police for their continued partnership and assistance throughout this investigation."
